Doris Cox Scurlock

Doris Helen Cox Scurlock, 87, was called home to be with the Lord on May 7, 2015 from her earthly home in Sumiton, Alabama, where she was born and lived her entire life. She was born on November 19, 1927, and was the only child of Clyde and Mabel Cox. Her formative years during the Great Depression had a lasting impact on her life and shaped her belief in hard work, education and preparation for whatever life throws your way, a legacy of lessons she instilled in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She met the love of her life, Louie Scurlock Sr., and they married October 1, 1946. Soon after they began their family and welcomed 3 children. Doris worked for the Walker County Board of Education for over 25 years, first as a teacher and later as the Director of the Head Start program in Walker and Winston County. One of her many accomplishments was ensuring every Head Start center in Walker County had a rocking chair and good books for the teachers to read to and rock the children, which she also did at every opportunity. She loved the children and her work so much, even when she “retired” she couldn’t give it up completely. She is preceded in death by her parents Clyde and Mabel Cox and by her husband, Louie Scurlock Sr, whom she is now reunited with forever. She is survived by her children; Patsy Jones (J.R.), Linda Daniel (Jack) and Louie Scurlock, Jr, her grandchildren; Sherry Morrow (Dennis), Angie Thursby, Kelly Hill (David), Jessica Liston (Chris) and Louie Scurlock III (Miranda) and 11 great-grandchildren; Dakota, Dalton, Mary Kathryn, Sarah Beth and Ella Rose Morrow, Kirsten Batchelor, Anavera Collison, Anne Elise, Lily Jayne, Sophia Kate and Georgia Grace Liston. She was active, full of life and very independent until she breathed her last. She taught us the importance of family, perseverance and strength. She will be loved and remembered by many who called her “Mama Doris.” Visitation will be Saturday night May 9, 2015 from 5-8 pm and again on Monday May 11, 2015 11:00-1 pm at New Horizon Memorial Chapel in Dora. Services will be Monday May 11, 2015 at 1:00 pm at the funeral home. Rev. Doug Tate will officiate. Burial will follow at Morgan Cemetery.
